Let’s do this! Organizational Meeting & SCAR’D Family BBQ!

Summer is here and it’s time to play!

Saturday, May 22nd!!! Everyone is invited to attend:
Skaters. Would-be Skaters. Parents. Siblings. Friends. Rage City Rollergirls and Refs. EVERYONE!!

Please try to arrive at 2:00 so we can get in all of our hugs and introductions, then….

The Organizational Meeting.   2:30 – 4:00
We have over 30 girls who have expressed interest in skating with SCAR’D!  It’s time to get ourselves organized.  I have so many great…and exciting… things to tell you about Junior Roller Derby and where SCAR’D stands on the national scene!   We’ll do a quick intro of the sport and the gear you’ll need to play. And then we’ll talk about our next steps…

There are six volunteer positions to fill.  These positions will head up committees to get a series of balls rolling. The skaters should all plan to be on a committee, but each committee needs to be headed up by an adult (parent, RCR skater or other community volunteer).  Finally, we have a few decisions to make right away about insurance, membership, Anchorage & Valley teams and more.

Don’t worry though…this will be FUN! I promise. It’s going to feel so good to be making these exciting plans!

Then its time to EAT!

The BBQ. 4:00 – Whenever we’re done.
Chuck & I will make a brisket, some hotdogs and some potato salad. We’ll even have sweet iced tea.  :)    We can hang out, get to know each other, play kickball in the back yard, watch derby bouts on the tv, make s’mores, maybe even do some outdoor skating if you’re geared up for it.

If you don’t want to drive back to Anchorage, there is plenty of room in our yard for you to pitch a tent and stay the night.  Heck, if you bring a loaf of bread and carton of eggs, Chuck will magically transform them into french toast for breakfast!

Please let me know if you can bring any of the items below to help us get our nosh on:

  • Paper products (plates, napkins, solo cups, forks, etc)
  • Meats to grill (here’s your chance to clean out the freezer!)
  • Chips & Dip
  • Veggie, salad or side dish
  • Dessert or sweets
  • Beverages or Ice
  • Lawn Chairs
  • Volleyball Net

View the event on our Groupspaces page to RSVP: http://groupspaces.com/scard/item/64485
Tip:  If you don’t have a login to Groupspaces yet, use this email account to set it up.  That will make sure Groupspaces connects your account to your membership with SCAR’D.

Thanks everyone! I can’t wait to see you there!  ~Witchy

Not again!

leave a comment »

I hate, hate, hate posting this, but we’ve got to push back the date for boot camp again. I am still trying to iron out the insurance details with the Borough for the gym. We also don’t have enough paid registrations to cover the cost for the gym yet.  With the holidays, its just been impossible to do the business and the marketing/recruiting necessary to make it happen on the 10th.

So what’s the new plan?  Well, there are a few irons in the fire.

First, mark your calendar for January 23rd!  That is the next Rage City Rollergirls bout. We’ve been asked to participate in the demo and we’ll be running the info booth/recruiting table again.  It’s a great opportunity to get the word out.  We may even be able to do a fundraiser at this bout. I’ll keep you posted on that.  If you’re coming to help out with the demo or the table, you get in the bout for free! I just need to get your name on “the list” by the 20th. Send me an email and tell me your coming!

Second, I’m working with a group of adult rollergirls and would-be rollergirls to join forces (and tiny budgets) to pay for practice space.  If we can combine our practices, then we can start with less girls. So that would be wonderful!  I’m hoping to have more news on that to report in a week or so.

Third, we need to RECRUIT! Tell EVERYONE you know about roller derby! Give them the web address (www.rollerdolls.org) or my email address (scard.info@gmail.com).  We need to have 12 girls paid in full to afford our practice space. That’s not very many, but with this being a new sport to Alaska, we need to really sell it.

Fourth, I’m working on a plan for loaner gear. One of the biggest obstacles to joining roller derby is the expensive gear you have to buy just to see if you like it.  I’m hoping to get some sponsorship, some gear donations and some rental skates from Royal so we have loaner gear for girls who are trying to decide if this is for them.  You still can’t gear up until you have USARS insurance, but this will make it a LOT more affordable to see if derby is the sport for you.  If you (or your parents) have any experience getting donations, please email me so we can join forces!

In the meantime, I’m going to update our flier, try to get it in as many schools in Anchorage and the Valley as possible, try to find a place where we can do an open house type intro to roller derby and keep working to make this happen for all of you!  More hands would make the work go much faster, so if you and your folks want to help flier or make some calls, please let me know!

I’ve been speaking with my friends on the Junior Roller Derby Association. This kind of slow start is COMPLETELY normal…even in cities 10x our size. We just have to be stubborn enough to push through it.  Are you stubborn enough?  I know I am!   We’ll keep meeting every Wednesday night at Royal. The session is from 6:30 – 9:00.  It’s a casual time to skate and meet, but occasionally we add a few drills in here and there on nights when it isn’t too crowded.

Thanks so much everyone!  I’ll see you on Wednesday at Royal!

What’s the BEST Christmas present ever for the 11 to 17 year old girl in your life?   Why, the gift of Roller Derby of course!!   Winter Boot Camp…our first boot camp ever…starts January 10th.  We’ll meet weekly for 10 weeks to become roller derby super stars!  There will also be numerous opportunities outside of practices to participate in events (some with the Rage City Rollergirls, our sister league), fundraisers, photo shoots and maybe even a few public appearances!  AND, we’ll continue meeting every Wednesday night at Royal Roller Rink in Anchorage.

Junior roller derby has an unmatched ability to nurture bold self-confidence in young women by developing teamwork and athletic ability while treasuring individuality within a culture of sisterhood, encouragement, and service to others.

If you have an 11 to 17 year old in your life, register now!  If you don’t, pass this information on to everyone you know who does. You’ll be the hero!

My apologies for being SO bad about keeping the website updated! We’ve been SO busy trying to get everything in place for our FIRST EVER BOOT CAMP that I just haven’t thought about web updates. I know, I know…if you don’t post about it, it didn’t happen. So, this is my pledge to do better.  I will follow-up this quick apology post with some info about the Boot Camp we’re planning.  ~ Witchy

Helping out our sister league

Our sister league, the Rage City Rollergirls, at hosting their first home bout of the season Saturday, October 24th at the AT&T Sports Pavilion in Anchorage. It’s time to get your zombie on! The Dirty Polli’s and the Sockeye Sallies are fighting to the finish. If you dress like a zombie, you’ll be entered into a drawing for free season tickets. Oh, and there’s gonna be a Thriller Dance Off at half-time.

Return of the Rolling Dead Bout Poster

If you’re a SCAR’D skater or ref…or you want to be…register with our league today! (It doesn’t cost a penny!)

Get into the bout for free! We are going to be helping our sisters by running a co-recruitment table during the bout…getting information out about how to join Rage City and how to join SCAR’D.  If you’re a member of SCAR’D and you’re volunteering at the bout, you can get in for free!

Boo Hoo! No Boot Camp…yet.

leave a comment »

Regrettably, due to insurance requirements and space availability, we must reschedule this Boot Camp for after the new year.  If you have paid the session fee, you have the option to receive a full refund or to apply this fee to the cost of the 10-week session that will begin in January.

Don’t be too sad though! We are meeting every Wednesday evening at Royal Roller Rink in Anchorage. The session is from 6:30 – 9:00 and it is $5 to get in. (I am currently working with Royal to possibly get the admission fee waived for SCAR’D members!)

Wednesday nights are great because they give us time  to get know each other, skate, learn some new skills and have fun. These are not official practices. You’ll have plenty of time to socialize and skate to your favorite songs. But  I do work with each skater one-on-one to improve her derby skills. If you bring all your gear, we can do even more fun things.

If these Wednesday sessions continue to grow, we will most likely add another session on the weekends giving everyone more options and/or more time to skate together.  I’ll keep everyone posted on that.

Thank you all so much for your patience as we launch this fantastic sport for young women!
