Not again!
I hate, hate, hate posting this, but we’ve got to push back the date for boot camp again. I am still trying to iron out the insurance details with the Borough for the gym. We also don’t have enough paid registrations to cover the cost for the gym yet. With the holidays, its just been impossible to do the business and the marketing/recruiting necessary to make it happen on the 10th.
So what’s the new plan? Well, there are a few irons in the fire.
First, mark your calendar for January 23rd! That is the next Rage City Rollergirls bout. We’ve been asked to participate in the demo and we’ll be running the info booth/recruiting table again. It’s a great opportunity to get the word out. We may even be able to do a fundraiser at this bout. I’ll keep you posted on that. If you’re coming to help out with the demo or the table, you get in the bout for free! I just need to get your name on “the list” by the 20th. Send me an email and tell me your coming!
Second, I’m working with a group of adult rollergirls and would-be rollergirls to join forces (and tiny budgets) to pay for practice space. If we can combine our practices, then we can start with less girls. So that would be wonderful! I’m hoping to have more news on that to report in a week or so.
Third, we need to RECRUIT! Tell EVERYONE you know about roller derby! Give them the web address (www.rollerdolls.org) or my email address (scard.info@gmail.com). We need to have 12 girls paid in full to afford our practice space. That’s not very many, but with this being a new sport to Alaska, we need to really sell it.
Fourth, I’m working on a plan for loaner gear. One of the biggest obstacles to joining roller derby is the expensive gear you have to buy just to see if you like it. I’m hoping to get some sponsorship, some gear donations and some rental skates from Royal so we have loaner gear for girls who are trying to decide if this is for them. You still can’t gear up until you have USARS insurance, but this will make it a LOT more affordable to see if derby is the sport for you. If you (or your parents) have any experience getting donations, please email me so we can join forces!
In the meantime, I’m going to update our flier, try to get it in as many schools in Anchorage and the Valley as possible, try to find a place where we can do an open house type intro to roller derby and keep working to make this happen for all of you! More hands would make the work go much faster, so if you and your folks want to help flier or make some calls, please let me know!
I’ve been speaking with my friends on the Junior Roller Derby Association. This kind of slow start is COMPLETELY normal…even in cities 10x our size. We just have to be stubborn enough to push through it. Are you stubborn enough? I know I am! We’ll keep meeting every Wednesday night at Royal. The session is from 6:30 – 9:00. It’s a casual time to skate and meet, but occasionally we add a few drills in here and there on nights when it isn’t too crowded.
Thanks so much everyone! I’ll see you on Wednesday at Royal!
